Siren inspires free Lincoln AtoZ exhibition

A new exhibition inspired by the Lincoln AtoZ street map opens to the public from 20th December at The Collection in Lincoln.

Lincoln AtoZ: The Exhibition is the culmination of a two-year project in which radio host Paul Tyler and producer Jonny Haw visited 52 randomly selected grid squares from the Lincoln AtoZ street map, on a mission to explore each grid and make a radio programme about each one.

Paul Tyler said: “Lincoln AtoZ is all about taking the time to explore our city and noticing the little details and nooks and crannies we usually pass by. The grid squares were chosen at random by members of the public, so we had no control over where we ended up.  Whether it was a busy city street or a completely empty field, we had to somehow make a radio programme about each and every one.”

As the series, broadcast on East Midlands Radio Station of the Year Siren FM, comes to an end, they have put together a collection of works by local artists inspired by the AtoZ concept. The exhibition includes works by photographers Rob Rickels, Kate Tyler and Julian Clune, artists Phil Martin, James Relf, Philip Clarke and Rosie Ablewhite.  The centrepiece of the exhibition is an installation by Paul Tyler featuring objects collected from each grid square over the past two years.

The exhibition is open to the public from 20th December in the Courtyard Gallery at The Collection, and continues through to 24th January.  Entry is free.

Jason%20Bradbury

TV’s Gadget Show host and author Jason Bradbury is to become a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Lincoln, UK, teaching students on the Computer Science and Product Design programmes.

The self-confessed technology addict will lend his experience and industry insight to one of the project modules on both courses which require final year students to put their learning into practice by tackling a challenging problem relevant to society.

Details of the projects are currently being kept under wraps, but Dr John Murray, Principal Lecturer in Lincoln’s School of Computer Science, said: “The students are in for a real challenge that they will find hugely rewarding and exciting.”

The University of Lincoln is an award-winning institution, recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) for its development of innovative approaches to learning.

Jason Bradbury said: “I’m confident that the course modules I created with the academic team at the University of Lincoln will ignite the passion and ingenuity of the students. Having spent some time in the incredible facilities at Lincoln and met several of the students, I fully expect to see some truly innovative results coming out of these two first modules. Watch this space!”

Walk this way: Lincoln in top five for students walking to campus

Walking%20in%20Lincoln

The University of Lincoln has been ranked among the top five universities in the UK for the proportion of students who can enjoy a cost-free stroll into campus.

In a new league table published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), Lincoln is ranked fourth in the UK, and third in England, for the percentage of students who commute to university on foot.

More than three quarters (77%) of Lincoln’s students walk to university each day. By contrast, for students in other areas of the country the cost of travel can be as much £15.10 per week in London and £12.50 per week in Brighton. The average cost of weekly travel for students nationwide is £6.50.

Earlier this month, the University of Lincoln received a Green Award – the highest level of accreditation from the nationwide Investors in the Environment (iiE) scheme – in recognition of its commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Dan Clayton, Environment and Sustainability Manager at the University of Lincoln, said: “At the University of Lincoln, we have implemented a comprehensive Travel Plan which focuses on delivering efficient travel for our staff and students and supports sustainable transport options and active travel, such as cycling and walking. Our campus Master Plan is also designed to ensure the Brayford Pool campus is accessible to all, offers a welcoming environment and forms an integral part of the city centre.”
