Cafe Scientifique now in Lincoln

cafesci_2014_11_02.2

We are a newly established Cafe Scientifique in Lincoln and we would like to invite everyone to join us on our next event on 17 November in the Double Tree by Hilton at the Brayford.

Cafe Scientifique evolves around discussing and learning about different scientific and social topics in a casual context. In our case, we invite guest speakers from around the country to present either some of their research or a topic of interest in a casual environment followed by discussions and questions with the audience (i.e. students, members of the public and University staff). Our events will be held on a monthly basis.

Our next guest speaker, Dr Enrico Ferrari, will be talking about the amazing field of nano-device assembly, which will give an excellent base for an engaging evening!

Our event will be held in the Viewing Gallery at the Hilton Double Tree. Our evening will include a talk, followed by questions and hopefully some interesting discussions!

Cafe Scientifique is open to everyone, whether you are a student, a member of staff or the public. All are welcome to what will be an incredible event.

Admission is free!

Please check out our website: http://cafescilincoln.co.uk/ to see who we are and what we are all about! Please feel free to contact us via email, social media or our website! If you are interested in attending please click here to put yourself as going on our event page on Facebook.

Armistice Day – Two minutes’ silence on 11 November

poppy field

To mark the anniversary of Armistice Day, the University will take part in the national two minutes’ silence at 11am on 11 November.

Armistice Day marks the cease fire signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France. This took place at 11am the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month” of 1918.

The red remembrance poppy has become the emblem of Remembrance Day due to the poem In Flanders Fields by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae. Poppies bloomed across some of the worst battlefields of Flanders in World War I.

Keeping safe with fireworks

ColorfulFireworks

Students are reminded that the safest place to enjoy fireworks is at planned, public events.

These events are managed, assessed and controlled by organisers who will have considered the hazards and risks that fireworks present.

Please be aware that fireworks are not permitted for use on any University site, including personal use in and around University accommodation buildings.

For full guidance on safe use of fireworks, please visit http://uolsafetystudent.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/?p=1486 and access the site using your University network username and password.

Celebrating Inspirational People at Lincoln

insp

To help communicate some of the amazing things our staff, students and alumni have done, special banners have been placed across the campus.

The banners highlight work from across the disciplines and are designed to spread some of the amazing stories generated by our University community.

There are currently 25 designs across campus, and we are asking staff and students to nominate members of the University community (staff, students or alumni) that have inspired them by emailing their nomination to internalcommunications@lincoln.ac.uk.

In the coming weeks, an online campaign will also begin be launched to highlight University successes.

They sell award-winning Grumpy Mule coffee, sandwiches, Panini, cold drinks and cakes. There is a small seating area as well for you to use while you eat. There is also a pop up catering service running on the ground floor of the Joseph Banks Laboratories every weekday from 10am to 11am. You can grab a sandwich, cold drink or tea/coffee here in between lectures if you don’t have enough time to go the café in the Think Tank.
