Project Space Plus presents Raqs Media Collective

Raqs Media Collective
Project Space Plus, AAD East, University of Lincoln
Opening Tuesday 12 April 5-7pm

You are invited to the opening of a new exhibition by New Delhi-based artists Raqs Media Collective at Project Space Plus.

In the run up to the opening of a new public work later in the year, Raqs are presenting selected past works, alongside a new series of prints.

“Happen-Stances” is a suite of prints based on Raqs Media Collective’s study of ‘An Investigation of The Laws of Thought’ a book by the nineteenth century Lincoln-born mathematician George Boole. Boole pioneered the concept of ‘logic gates’ using category constellations such as ‘yes’ and ‘no’ that went on to become the foundations of ‘Boolean Logic’ in computer programming. In Happen-Stances, Raqs weaves statements about wealth, possibility, ethics and abundance out of the texture of Boole’s formulations, through the operations of chance. These are transformed into image-text objects that could be aids to thinking, or simply enjoyed as anticipations of word-sculptures in print form.

The Raqs Media Collective enjoys playing a plurality of roles, often appearing as artists, occasionally as curators, sometimes as philosophical agent provocateurs. They make contemporary art, have made films, curated exhibitions, edited books, staged events, collaborated with architects, computer programmers, writers and theatre directors and have founded processes that have left deep impacts on contemporary culture in India.

Raqs have had recent major exhibitions in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, St Louis and Boston, took part in the Venice Biennale in 2015, and have been appointed the chief curators for the forthcoming Shanghai Biennale.

Free entry

Open Mon – Saturday 10am – 4pm
Exhibition continues until 7 May

See Dallas Campbell live

DallasSmall

A broadcaster who has brought his love of science and adventure to life for millions of viewers will lift the lid on the challenges of front line television in the University of Lincoln’s last Great Minds guest lecture of the academic year.

Dallas Campbell, whose work includes the upcoming BBC2 aviation series City In The Sky as well as Britain Beneath Your Feet, Stargazing Live, The Treasure Hunters, Bang Goes the Theory, Voyager, The Drake Equation, Egypt’s Lost Cities and ground-breaking documentary Supersized Earth, will give an insider’s view on the challenges of bringing technical and scientific stories to a broad audience.

He will also examine why it is so important that factual programmes stay at the forefront of prime TV viewing, and will take questions from the audience after the talk.

The talk, Dallas in Wonderland – Adventures in science television, will take place at the Engine Shed at the University of Lincoln’s main Brayford Pool Campus on 18 April 2016 at 6pm, with registration from 5.30pm. Admission is free but booking is essential. Priority will be given to groups from UK schools and colleges.

“From Mexican sewer diving to Russian rocket launches, I’ve had more than my fair share of television adventures,” said Dallas.

“In this talk I will share hair-raising tales from the coal-face of science television, talking about the challenges of presenting science to wide audiences, and the importance of bringing big ideas to the small screen. I’m delighted to be part of the University of Lincoln’s Great Minds lecture series.”

Dallas joins the ranks of other notable names to have already spoken at this year’s Great Minds guest lecture series at the University of Lincoln, including naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham, Speaker of the House, the Right Honourable John Bercow MP, and crime writer Ann Cleeves. The next Great Minds lecture season begins in September 2016. Further details will be revealed ahead of the 2016/17 academic year.

Introducing Alfie – the prototype care home robot

A robot being developed to help elderly people stay independent and active for longer has been named by residents of three local care homes where it is going to be tested.

As part of the ENRICHME project – pioneering robotics research funded by an EU Horizon 2020 grant – residents from LACE Housing Association’s housing with extra care in Lincolnshire have called the first prototype robot Alfie.

ENRICHME (ENabling Robot and assisted living environment for Independent Care and Health Monitoring of the Elderly) is an international collaboration involving the University of Lincoln in the UK. The research will develop and test the ability of robots to support our ageing populations and see service robots integrated with ‘smart home’ technology in order to provide round-the-clock feedback to elderly users, carers and health professionals. Tasks the robots will be designed to help with include giving reminders to take medication, locating lost objects around the home and enabling video chat with family and friends.

Alfie the robot

The first ENRICHME development robot, programmed by artificial intelligence and robotics experts from the University of Lincoln’s School of Computer Science, was introduced to the residents in December 2015. During a special launch event, the researchers showcased the robot, explained the project and conducted some initial tests in the home environment to aid early development processes.

Residents from the LACE housing with extra care schemes in Lincoln, Grantham and Bourne were then invited to vote for their favourite name for the robot. ‘Alfie’ was selected as the winner from a shortlist of five names put together by the ENRICHME team.

Dr Nicola Bellotto, Reader in Computer Science at the University of Lincoln and Principal Investigator for the ENRICHME project, said: “We are delighted that the residents have named our first prototype robot, with ‘Alfie’ proving to be a popular choice.

The name is a diminutive of Alfred, which means ‘sage’ or ‘wise’, and it also refers to the famous Lincolnshire poet, Alfred Lord Tennyson, so it has wonderful connotations locally. The robot has received an extremely positive reception from the residents so far and we are pleased that they are keen to be involved at each stage of the project.

“The system we are developing builds on recent advances in mobile service robotics and ambient assisted living to help people improve health and wellbeing. It will be of particular benefit to those people who have mild cognitive impairments, for example older people who are still physically healthy but may have early symptoms of dementia.”

Hazel Ashmore, Project Lead Officer for LACE Housing, said: “Initial reactions from our residents have been very positive, with many looking forward to potentially participating in the final testing phase in 2017.”

Lincoln student wins national competition

victoriabellphoto2

A business student has secured a top graduate job after winning a national competition for rising stars of the events industry.

Victoria Bell, who is in the third year of her BSc (Hons) Events Management degree in the University’s Lincoln Business School, defeated 14 other finalists in The Eventice 2016 held in London (from 1 to 3 March).

Her prize is a job starting in June at the Bluehat Group, a major London events company, after winning the competition which was assessed by a group of industry professionals in a format similar to the popular TV show, ‘The Apprentice’.

Among the tasks Victoria completed during the three-day final was to write a pitch for an event in Rio de Janeiro, devise a viral marketing campaign for The Shard and give a talk about a personal passion.

A further assignment was a ‘Scavenger Hunt’ where she was asked to find obscure items within a fixed time limit.

Victoria, who is originally from Cyprus, said: “Overall it was a pretty intense experience, but I’ve met some amazing people who I hope to stay in touch with. I’m still finalising the details with Bluehat, but I will be their new account executive come June.

“Over my three years at the University I have undertaken a range of modules in not only events, but finance and business. They have given me a range of skills from a number of different backgrounds.”

Hanya Pielichaty, Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Events Management programme at the University of Lincoln, said: “The Events Management degree is only in its fourth year so to win a competition like this is an amazing achievement for both Victoria and our degree course.

“We had every confidence in Victoria and she has made both the staff and students within the Events and Tourism subject group very proud. We wish Victoria the very best with her future employee.’

This competition, which was started in 2011, is for final year events management students at universities across the UK. It is run by esprecruitment in association with Mash Media and Bluehat.
