Academic joins prominent women helping to shape Egypt’s future

Amira Elnokaly receives her awardA specialist in sustainable architectural design from the University of Lincoln was among 31 prominent Egyptian women leaders from around the world selected to present at a conference highlighting international successes of Egyptian women.

Dr Amira Elnokaly received a presidential invitation to attend the ‘Egyptian Women Can’ Conference in July, which was sponsored by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. It was organized by the Ministry of Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates’ Affairs in cooperation with the National Council for Women (NCW).

The conference aimed to strengthen the role of Egyptian expatriate women in developing Egypt, while shedding light on the achievements of Egyptian experts abroad in all fields. A range of issues were discussed, including effective governance, health, economy, education, and media.

Dr Elnokaly was invited to speak at the event to discuss her ongoing research to address pressing sustainable and environmental issues affecting poor communities living in underdeveloped areas of Egypt and sustainable development of newly developed smart cities in the country.

Earlier this year she was awarded £40,000 through the British Council’s Newton-Mosharafa Fund, a seven-year science and innovation partnership between the UK and Egypt bringing together leading academics, researchers and innovation sectors to find joint solutions to the challenges facing Egyptian sustainable development in South Sinai.

While at the conference, Dr Elnokaly was honoured further by the Minister of Immigration and Expatriate Affairs, Dr Nabila Makram, and the President of the National Council for Women in Egypt, Dr Maya Morsy, who presented her with the Egypt Can 2017 award for her continued research and contribution to the sustainable development of Egypt.

Dr Amira Elnokaly, from the University of Lincoln’s School of Architecture and the Built Environment, said: “During my academic career I have been privileged enough to be invited to conferences across the world. I always feel honoured to receive these requests but to be invited as a main contributor to such a high profile event in my home country and to be acknowledged with this prestigious award under the patronage of the President of Egypt is an extremely proud moment for me.”

“The event showcases the Egyptian presidency’s belief in the importance of women in the future development of Egypt and I am proud to play my part in shaping the country’s future.”

Following the success of the conference, Dr Elnokaly has been invited to continue her advisory role to key Egyptian ministers and will return to the country in October 2017.

Success for Lincoln’s Filmmaking Summer School

Filmmaking Summer SchoolBudding film makers from across Europe and as far afield as China descended on Lincoln last month, as the Lincoln School of Film and Media’s Filmmaking Summer School got underway.

Led by Dominique Webb and running for a third consecutive year, the two-week course offered the film-making enthusiasts the chance to learn from the University’s experienced academics and get a taste of higher education learning at a UK institution.

During the course the students took part in a range of workshops and masterclasses, providing expert, professional tuition in all aspects of film productions, development, screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography, and sound and post-production.

Using the specialist equipment available on campus, they were able to put their new-found knowledge and skills to the test and each produced their very own short fictional film. They also enjoyed a field trip to the Warner Bros Studio Tour.

New ‘virtual knight’ gallops into Lincoln

Visitors to Lincoln’s Brayford Pool waterfront can catch a glimpse of a new ‘secret knight’ with the launch of an innovative augmented reality mobile app today (Monday 7th August 2017).

Developed by the University of Lincoln in partnership with Lincoln Business Improvement Group (BIG), the application, available free to download for Android phones, reveals a 3D image of a medieval knight galloping across the user’s screen. The image is triggered when the phone’s camera detects the secret marker located off Brayford Wharf East near to the University, on the bridge overlooking the Brayford Pool.

The appearance of the knight and his trusty steed can be customised from 64 colour combinations available, along with size of the image which can be changed with a simple tap of the screen.

A picture frame installed on the bridge allows the user to capture their knight in all its glory, set against the beautiful backdrop of the city’s Brayford Pool and the magnificent Lincoln Cathedral.

The installation also features a wireless access point, allowing visitors to download the application and share their customised knight with friends and family on social media.

The digital project was inspired by the Lincoln Knights’ Trail, a series of spectacular knight sculptures which have taken centre stage in a programme of events in the city commemorating the 800th anniversary of the Battle of Lincoln and the sealing of the Charter of the Forest.

With the help and support of academics in the University’s School of Computer Science, the application was developed by PhD student Kieran Hicks. It builds on the School’s ongoing research exploring augmented reality interaction design in a public setting.

The project has been led by Sukhy Johal MBE, Director of the Centre for Culture & Creativity at the University of Lincoln. He said: “The Lincoln Knights’ Trail has proved to be one of the biggest attractions in Lincoln in 2017 and as a proud sponsor of the trail we are delighted to be able to add to these celebrations further with our interactive installation.

“With the expertise of those in the School of Computer Science, we have been able to develop an installation that brings the story of these famous knights to life. I hope people will enjoy using the app as much as we have enjoyed creating it and will catch the ‘Lincoln Secret Knight’ while they can!”

Matt Corrigan, Chief Executive of Lincoln Business Improvement Group, added: “Lincoln BIG is thrilled to see the launch of this application which combines the great history of the city with forward-thinking, 21st-century fun! Having such a fantastic university in the heart of the city is a tremendous asset and we’ve been proud to work with them to create this exciting installation for everyone to enjoy.”

Children’s book grabs commendation at national education awards

Lincolnshire PuppyA children’s book which encourages primary school pupils across Lincolnshire to aim high in their ambitions has won a commendation at a national education awards.

The Lincolnshire Puppy is an illustrated story telling the tale of a mischievous dog who gets into all sorts of scrapes until his friends show him that learning is fun and a route to be anything he wants to be.

With references to famous Lincolnshire landmarks and institutions, from Lincoln Cathedral to the Red Arrows, the book aims to build confidence and aspiration in young children so that they can realise their ambitions – and discover that learning can also be fun.

It is a publication from the Lincolnshire Outreach Network – a partnership of higher education providers from across Lincolnshire led by the University of Lincoln. It is written by Elly Sample with illustrations by Ruddocks Design of Lincoln and a foreword by the broadcaster and naturalist Chris Packham, a Visiting Professor at Lincoln.

Free copies of The Lincolnshire Puppy were posted to almost 300 primary schools across the region for Early Years and Year 1 classes in the 2016/17 school year. A competition was also launched for children of other age groups to claim their free copy by sending in stories and pictures about what they want to be when they are older. The first print run of 10,000 books quickly ran out and a further batch of the same size was ordered to meet demand.

The Lincolnshire Puppy was Highly Commended in the Best Community / Business Engagement category at the national HEIST Awards 2017*, which celebrate the excellence and innovation of everyone involved in education marketing, from regional colleges to global university brands.

Elly Sample, Director of Communications, Development & Marketing at the University of Lincoln, said: “We are delighted to be recognised by HEIST for our engagement with primary school children across Lincolnshire.

“Higher education is a life-changing experience and yet for many reasons there are still significant barriers that mean young people from less advantaged backgrounds are under-represented at universities. Lincolnshire in particular has some stark higher education cold spots – places where the percentage of teenagers progressing to university is significantly lower than would be expected based on their academic achievements at school.

“There is evidence that children’s journeys in education are largely determined before they reach secondary school, which is why The Lincolnshire Puppy aims to encourage and inspire young children, their parents and carers to aim high, whatever their ambitions.”

Paul Banton, Managing Director at Ruddocks said: “As a company we are very focussed on our local community and we are delighted to be working with the University of Lincoln to promote and encourage ambitions of the young people in our county, whether that be academic or vocational. This is just one of many educational support projects Ruddocks are currently involved in; it is an important role of local businesses to provide guidance and mentoring for the workforce of the future.”
