New Lifts in MHT

The two new lifts servicing all floors in the MHT Building are being tested and will be opening to staff and students during the week commencing 5th February.

The scaffolding, hoardings and temporary access arrangements will also be removed in early February.

Thank you for your patience during construction.

Work to further improve the MHT building internally and externally will continue in the summer. There will be a more comprehensive refresh of the third floor to include a learning lounge space, the addition of new and improvement of existing teaching spaces. External works will improve the thermal performance (energy efficiency) of the building in order to reduce carbon footprint of the building.

If you have any questions about the works already completed or those being undertaken in the summer, please contact Estates by email.

Follow-up Public Engagement with Research Survey

pearl2Are you involved in public engagement at Lincoln? Would you like more training or support? We’d like to know.

Engaging the public with research is a key part of the University’s activity as it makes research more accessible, interesting, relevant and valuable to wider society. This helps increase public support for universities, develop new partnerships and introduce new ideas, supporting recruitment and enhancing research quality, capacity and impact.

The RCUK-funded PEARL (Public Engagement for All with Research at Lincoln) project aims to enhance the University’s approach to involving the public in research. We recently carried out a survey of attitudes amongst staff and students to the University’s current provision for public engagement with research – you can read more about the results here.

Drawing on the results from this survey, the next steps for PEARL are to find out (1) what public engagement activities are currently taking place and (2) what sort of training / CPD, support, opportunities and recognition staff and students would like to see made available. We can then add activities to our website so that people can see how much public engagement happens and where to find it, and access CPD which suits staff and students.

To do this, we would like to invite all University staff and students to complete a survey. It should only take about ten minutes, and can be found here.  Please complete the survey before it closes on Friday 16th February at 4pm. Your responses can be anonymous and will be very much appreciated.

Funding Available for Public Engagement in Research

pearl2Do you have an activity involving the public in research that you would like to fund?

The University of Lincoln’s RCUK-funded PEARL (Public Engagement for All with Research at Lincoln) project is aiming to fund six new activities involving the public in research.

Examples of activities could include (but are not limited to) an interactive talk or demonstration at a local school, having the public participate in your research (e.g. taking a survey, sports performance analysis with local athletes, community archaeological excavation, children’s language studies etc.), hosting a public event, focus group or debate – be as creative as you like.

Grants are open to staff and students. Further Application Guidelines and Forms can be accessed from the PEARL website.

Completed forms should be submitted to pearl@lincoln.ac.uk via email by Friday 23rd February at 4pm.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to email the PEARL team on pearl@lincoln.ac.uk.

Inaugural Lecture: Professor Graham Law | 30th Jan

glawThe College of Social Science will be hosting the next Professorial Inaugural Lecture on Tuesday 30th January 2018. This series of lectures are an opportunity to hear about the research work of some of our newest Professors in the College of Social Science at the University of Lincoln.

In this lecture, Professor Graham Law will speak on “Sleep, Sugar and Statistics”, presenting some of his research over the past 25 years, having looked at where disease occurs, how it is caused and what may be done to reduce its burden on our society.

Much of his research has focused on diabetes, with a more recent interest in sleep and its consequences. He has pioneered the development and application of complicated methods. Professor Law will discuss where he thinks research into chronic disease may be heading and how this may impact. Particularly the recent developments in an understanding of ‘Type 3 Diabetes’, or Alzheimer’s as it is also known.

The lecture will take place in the Minerva Building at the University of Lincoln. Arrival is from 5.30pm for a 6pm start. The presentation will conclude at 7pm with a drinks reception offering an opportunity for networking, and to continue any discussions arising from the lecture.

Be Inspired Lecture: Off the ‘Sticky Floor’ | 23rd Jan

Looking for a little inspiration to kick start 2018? The Eleanor Glanville Centre is holding first Be Inspired! Lecture of the year.

Off the ‘Sticky Floor’ – Make Room for yourself!
7 Learnings that bring ‘Experience to Life’
Presented by Ruchi Aggarwal from the Lincoln International Business School

Ruchi Aggarwal

There is much to learn and get inspired by in our journey of our careers – for whatever we choose to do. This talk, the first in the series, by a woman leader, will focus on her experiences with that journey and will offer 7 practical learnings that we can consider, towards the outcomes we want to achieve. Women have made great advances in leadership roles over the past decade; however, there are still many challenges to be faced and overcome. While we are all too familiar with the metaphor of a glass ceiling that puts the onus on others, the ‘sticky floor’ puts the ball straight back in our court. The talk will offer seven practical learnings that will give you some inspiration of the power that lies in our own hands, to create our own success.

Ruchi has worked with diverse industry sectors – Sports @ Scottish Rugby at Edinburgh; Telecom @ Vodafone in India; IT @ Microsoft, in India – before joining the Higher Education sector with us at the University of Lincoln in September 2016. She currently is the Director for Business Development at the Lincoln International Business School and is keenly involved in our strategy of expanding into India.

The lecture takes place at 5.15pm on Tuesday 23rd January in the Co-Op Lecture Theatre, Minerva Building, and will be followed by a wine reception.

This lecture is free to attend but prior booking is essential. Please book your place online: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/be-inspired-lecture-ruchi-aggarwal-tickets-41830177186
