Tickets are priced at £10 per person, with a maximum of six tickets per transaction. To purchase, please either visit the University’s online store, or visit the University’s Sports Centre at the Brayford Pool Campus. The Sports Centre opening hours are Monday – Thursday: 7am – 10pm, Friday: 7am – 9.30pm and Saturday – Sunday: 10am – 5pm.

Staff/student ID will be required to complete the purchase.

Lincolnshire-born former astronaut and astrophysicist, Michael Foale CBE, will return to the University of Lincoln, UK, to share his out-of-this-world career insights as the most experienced, British-born astronaut in the history of human space travel.

Having accrued more than 373 days in space, Michael will share his memories, photographs and video footage from his time in outer space. His talk will include details of his six Space Shuttle missions, time spent on the iconic Soyuz spacecraft, and being commander of the International Space Station.

Attendees will also hear about the vital repairs he made in 1995 to the Hubble Space Telescope during an arduous eight-hour spacewalk – as the first-ever Briton to undertake such a feat. His astronomical accomplishments were officially recognised when he was inducted into the NASA Astronaut Hall of Fame Class of 2017 at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

The event is held in collaboration with Pint of Science, and will take place on Wednesday 25 October 2023, from 7pm until 9pm. Booking is essential.

The Lincoln Climate Action Festival will return in November this year, with the theme of nature positivity.

Now in its third year, the week-long festival at the University of Lincoln, UK, offers free climate awareness activities running between Monday 13 and Sunday 19 November and is open to all members of the public.

The event will also host a dedicated art exhibition in the University’s Project Space Plus, a gallery space for creative enquiry, experimentation, and contemporary thinking. The team are calling for local artists to present their work in celebration of this year’s theme, and are looking for artistic work which celebrates nature in all its forms, including wildlife photography, plant-based or biodegradable art.

A range of local organisations including the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust, the Lincoln Climate Commission and Wilder Doddington will also be supporting the event with their own planned initiatives.

The week aims to raise awareness of how we can all engender a more sustainable, climate-friendly approach into our everyday lives. Attendees will have the opportunity to take part in many activities, including wildlife surveying, learning about carbon neutral practices, and a sustainability café with a book swap and crafting with nature-friendly materials.

Rebecca Mills, Head of Sustainability at the University of Lincoln, said: “A key aim for the University is to engage with our staff, students, and members of the local community on positive action and education in relation to sustainability, climate change and biodiversity. We hope to include as many people as possible in this week of events and instil a sense of Climate Hope and an appreciation of the natural world.”

In 2019, the University of Lincoln declared a climate emergency to stand with other organisations taking the future of the planet seriously, and continues to work with its staff, students, Students’ Union, and wider community to implement sustainable pathways in all undertakings.

This commitment to the environment is reflected in a range of green spaces throughout the University’s Brayford Pool Campus, including wildflower meadows and pollinator enhancing rewilded areas on the estate and kitchen gardens. During their time at the University, students can take part in many environmental projects, from the edible campus project, Hedgehog Friendly Campus initiative, and the annual Brayford Pool clean-up.

The University gave a warm welcome to new and returning students in the first ever Welcome to Lincoln event, held at Lincoln Cathedral on Tuesday 10 October.

Usually the setting for the University’s flagship graduation ceremonies each year, the event marked the start of the journey into the new academic year to recognise the community in which staff and students become a part of when they join the University.

The programme included choral and instrumental music and welcomes from representatives of the University, the Cathedral and the city. Following the ceremony, there was also an opportunity to meet new faces from the University community with a drinks reception. 

Book your place at the Brian Winston Memorial lecture on Friday 10 November 2023. Titled, “Prime Ministers and TV – the Love-Hate Relationship”, the talk will be delivered by award-winning documentary maker Michael Cockerell.

Event summary:

Every modern prime minister has loved, hated, or feared television. Some have done all three. Award-winning documentary maker Michael Cockerell has filmed and interviewed 10 prime ministers over the years. In this public lecture, he will tell the tragi-comic inside story of the battle for control between the PMs and the broadcasters. He will reveal how the two sides have become increasingly savvy and sophisticated – with each accusing the other of dirty tricks and fake news.

The event will be held in the Isaac Newton Building lecture theatre and will start at 6.30pm.

Professor Brian Winston was known for securing prestigious international prizes for his books and films, and was also the recipient of the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Achievement Writing for an Information Series in 1985. He was also named the Lincoln Professor in 2007 – the highest academic honour at the University.
