Fancy a Pint – of Science? Return of Festival Brings Accessible Learning to Lincoln’s Locals

A group of 18 researchers from the University of Lincoln, UK, will share their scientific discoveries in venues across Lincoln, with the return of the global science festival, Pint of Science.

The three-day annual celebration of science will take place between 13 and 15 May, and scientists from the University will discuss a range of thought-provoking topics from ghost stories to Lincoln’s famous swan population, and the science behind gambling.Kay Ritchie, Associate Professor in Cognitive Psychology at the University of Lincoln and Lincoln Pint of Science lead, said: “We’re really excited to bring Pint of Science back to Lincoln for our fourth year in our local venues. We’re looking forward to showcasing some University of Lincoln research in a fun and interactive way. With nine events across three nights, there’s something for everyone.”Professor at the University of Lincoln, Anna Wilkinson, will give a unique insight into gambling addition, at one of Monday night’s events, “Mind Control”. Commenting on her upcoming talk, Anna said: “As addiction develops, the brain changes in response to ‘highs’ and develops ‘cravings’. Research has shown that people who experience gambling addiction share similar alterations in the brain as people with drug addiction.“When hooked, a physical withdrawal occurs when individuals attempt to stop gambling. My talk will look at what happens in the brain when someone gambles and explore what it is about gambling games that make them so attractive.”In addition to the series of evening talks, members of the public will also have the unique opportunity to see original works of art inspired by the researchers’ talks, blending art and science at the exhibition, Creative Reactions, displayed at Lincoln Cathedral’s Chapter House between 5 and 16 May 2024.More details and tickets are available online: www.pintofscience.co.uk/events/lincoln.

University Wins National Best Accommodation Award – Voted for by Students

The University of Lincoln, UK, has won a national award for its student accommodation and is also placed in the top three universities in the UK to be recognised in the University of the Year category at the prestigious WhatUni Student Choice Awards (WUSCAs) 2024.

WhatUni is the UK’s largest source of real and honest reviews directly received from students. This year, more than 39,000 student reviews were collected from over 100 universities across the UK, making the WUSCAs the largest and only annual university awards in the UK, voted for exclusively by students.

Hosted by well-known comedian Sir Lenny Henry CBE, the WUSCAs ceremony took place on the evening of Wednesday 24 April in London. The University of Lincoln came first out of all UK universities for its modern, high-quality accommodation. The institution was also awarded bronze in the highly-sought after University of the Year award.

Lincoln student Kadie, gave her review of the University’s accommodation and campus: “Very convenient location, well maintained and modern-looking accommodation, great proximity from both high street and uni campus. Extremely beautiful campus and city, with everything in close proximity makes it an easy and enjoyable place to live and attend for uni.”

Student, Tia-Marie Cane, also reviewed her experience of living in University-managed accommodation, saying: “I love that it’s a two-minute walk to my lectures as the accommodation village is on site. This also makes me feel safer as I know I’m surrounded with students and staff from the uni and security gave me their number to keep saved in my phone.”

Another review from current student Alexandra Samson was: “Cygnet Wharf is in an excellent location and is approximately a 20 second walk from campus. We have amazing views and the rooms are very modern. I love the layout of the accommodation and how many people are assigned to the flats.”

The Global Student Living Index 2023 has certified Lincoln’s accommodation as GOLD, based on the condition and quality, value for money, care and support, recycling and environmental facilities, and overall management of University-managed residences. Lincoln is the third most affordable university city in the UK in the NatWest Student Living Index 2023.

A summary of the University’s awards from the event: 1st in the UK for Halls and Student Accommodation, 2nd in the UK for International, 2nd in the UK for Postgraduate, 3rd for University of the Year, 3rd in the UK for Student Life, 3rd in the UK for Facilities, and 4th in the UK for Student Support.

Record Numbers for the University’s Second Annual Student Enterprise Conference

The hugely popular Student Enterprise Conference returned for 2024, taking place on Wednesday 21 February at the Engine Shed on campus.

The day launched with a short networking session for attendees, where students were encouraged to make new connections before a welcome talk from the University’s Student Enterprise Manager, Reece Leggett.

The first session of the day was focussed on business investment and funding, joined by panel members Thomas Atkins (Managing Director, Identity Agency), Laura Mallaburn (Head Business Support & Angel Network Manage, Lincoln Science & Innovation Park) & Lewis Stringer (Senior Manager UK Network – East & South-East Midlands, British Business Bank) with Reece Leggett chairing the panel. The panel outlined key strategies for start-up businesses to apply for funding, as well as some of the risks to consider when applying for funding.

The second session of the day featured a graduate business owner panel. A wide range of University of Lincoln alumni were present; Maureen O’Callaghan (Beyond Money CIC), Luke Smith (Bloe Health), Osayomwanbor Wilfred Ehioba (Ehioba & Co) & Emma Haigh (Jailhouse Frock), with Dominick McOmish (Marketing & Communications Assistant, University of Lincoln) facilitating. The panel answered a wide range of questions, including their inspiration in starting a business, what keeps them motivated, how they manage the work/life balance as a start-up, how they connect with customers and more.

Lunch was provided by the Engine Shed, which gave another opportunity for attendees to network and connect with speakers from the previous panels.

The final session of the day was a keynote session with Kay Kukoyi (Founder, Purposeful Group), who tackled the topic of AI and how it can benefit business owners, with a particular focus on adaption for SMEs. Kay delivered an insightful, engaging talk in which she outlined some of the key tools that entrepreneurial students should be looking to familiarise themselves with.

The conference was attended by a record number of students, which demonstrates the high level of support provided to students by the University’s Student Enterprise team. Following on from the news that the University of Lincoln is a top-5 University for supporting Student Start-Ups, the Student Enterprise team is pleased to continue their hard work in providing a dedicated resource for students looking to explore self-employment as a future career path.

Reece Leggett, Student Enterprise Manager at the University, said: “The conference is our flagship event, and we were really pleased to see such a strong turnout from students, with lots of new faces in the audience as well. Self-employment is becoming a more and more popular option for graduates, and days like today are a perfect example to spark that idea and give attendees an insight into what running a business could look like for them.
