A Pint of Science: World’s Largest Festival of Public Science Talks Returns to Lincoln Pubs

The hugely popular Pint of Science festival returns  to Lincoln on Monday 22 May 2023 for a three-day celebration which will take science out of the laboratory and into the pub.

The aim of the festival is to provide a space for researchers and members of the public alike to come together, be curious, and chat about fascinating research in a relaxed environment.

12 researchers from different subject areas at the University of Lincoln will deliver 12 talks over three nights in The Cardinal’s Hat and The Pessimist pubs in the city, covering a range of topics from dog body language to forensic science, and robotics.

Titles of the talks will include “The Secret Minds of Reptiles”, “A Horse in Cow’s Clothing: The Analysis of Food Fraud” and “Trees for Neurodiversity: Thriving Through Forest School”.

Dr Kay Ritchie, Senior Lecturer in Cognitive Psychology at the University and Pint of Science lead for Lincoln, said: “We’re really excited to bring Pint of Science back to Lincoln for our third year in our local pubs. We’re looking forward to showcasing some University of Lincoln research in a fun and interactive way. With six events across three nights, there’s something for everyone.”

Anna Wilkinson, Professor of Animal Cognition at the University, will give a unique insight into the minds of reptiles, at the Monday night’s event “Understanding Animals”. Speaking about her talk, she said: “Reptiles are generally considered to be sluggish and unintelligent creatures; however, our research reveals that they are anything but. My talk will introduce the audience to the world of reptile cognition, showing evidence of the remarkable cognitive abilities in this group and will consider the implications for their welfare in captivity. This talk aims to get you thinking about what’s going on inside the brains of our scaly friends.

The Lincoln festival will also include Creative Reactions – a programme where science meets art to produce unique works of art, inspired by scientists’ research. The artwork will be displayed in the South Transept of Lincoln Cathedral between 16 May and 1 June 2023.

Tickets for the Pint of Science talks will be available to purchase from Monday 17 April online: www.pintofscience.co.uk/events/lincoln.

Join Lincoln’s 23 Hour Cycle BRIT Challenge to Help Promote Better Wellbeing For All

Unite with universities and colleges across the country for the 2023 British Inspiration Trust (BRIT) Challenge dedicated to supporting student and staff mental health, fitness and wellbeing nationally.

Our University community will also have the unique opportunity to attend a talk by Phil Packer MBE, founder and unpaid CEO of BRIT, who was inspired to create the charity following his extraordinary completion of a series of extreme physical challenges after sustaining catastrophic spinal injuries while serving in Iraq. For some time, he was under the command of Lincoln’s own Deputy Vice Chancellor Julian Free.

The severity of his injuries meant that Phil was unlikely to walk again, yet after five months of hospitalisation and six months of rehabilitation, he rowed the English Channel, completed the London Marathon (in 14 days), and scaled El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, all in the space of six months.

Each of these outstanding feats has raised money and awareness for causes close to Phil’s heart, raising a total of over £1.3 million for the wounded. By working with and being appointed as an ambassador for numerous charities, he felt that the charity sector could collaborate better. This prompted the creation of BRIT. Money raised through the 2023 challenge will be split between BRIT and another charity of the fundraiser’s choice; in Lincoln’s case, this will be Bromhead Medical Charity.

Phil Packer MBE said: “I am thrilled to have been invited to the University of Lincoln and join students and staff as they participate in their BRIT Challenge activity. I am overwhelmed with the engagement and support from across the education and sport sectors and delighted that universities and colleges are coming up with innovative ways to take part.”

What is the BRIT Challenge?

The BRIT Challenge is an annual challenge run over the past three years with almost 250 universities and colleges participating. This year, the challenge will centre around a theme of ‘2023’, commencing on 23 January and finishing on the 23 March 2023.

In Lincoln, we are hosting a 23-hour cycle challenge where students and staff can sign up to cycle for a slot of 20 minutes, though you’re more than welcome to commit to longer by booking multiple slots. The bikes, supplied by Lincoln’s Sports Centre, will aim to be running continuously throughout the night.

You’ll be in good company, as DVC Julian Free has already signed up to cycle the final slot, commenting that: “The BRIT Challenge is a fantastic opportunity for the University of Lincoln Community to support the BRIT Trust in raising funds to help young people struggling with their mental health whilst taking part in an activity which will also improve ours – though it might leave us gasping for breath!”

Why sign up?

The challenge itself encourages better mental and physical health by encouraging participants to do something active with other members of their university community, while raising money for a local cause. Bromhead Medical Charity is committed to improving healthcare through offering grants to individuals who need support for treatments, diagnosis, surgical procedures, consultations or therapies. Many of the people benefiting from the charity are helped because they had to wait too long, or their operation wasn’t available on the NHS, or because someone else depended upon them being well.

Where and when?

The University of Lincoln’s challenge will take place in the Isaac Newton building from 23 January 10am to 24 January 9am, lasting a total of 23 hours. Phil Packer will be present for the final hour before giving his talk in the Jackson Lecture Theatre at 10:30am which will open into a Q&A.

Savings Summit Takes on Financial Wellbeing in the Workplace

A Workplace Savings Summit is being hosted by Cushon and the University of Lincoln on Thursday 17th November, both in person at Toynbee Hall, London and virtually via a livestream.

Following the resounding success of the University’s bespoke workplace savings scheme that financially empowers students, the event will lobby for greater government support and workplace change for those who may not meet automatic enrolment requirements for a pension or will be entering workplaces in the future.

Judges from the Employee Benefits Awards 2022 felt that Lincoln’s scheme had potential scalability and could be adapted more widely; the Workplace Savings Summit will generate discussions into achieving just that. Alongside this complimentary feedback, the judges bestowed the University with the ‘Best Pension Strategy Award’ and the ‘Grand Prix’ for being the most outstanding of all entry winners.

The summit will explore the future of workplace savings through a selection of speakers including Dr Alex George who will address the mental health implications associated with financial wellbeing. Students from the University of Lincoln will also be present delivering the final session of the day on what they will look for from employers to support saving and asking questions to ensure that discussions are consistently directed toward topics that matter to them most as the future workforce.

Intended to inspire and educate other employers and industry professionals across the country, the event will supply excellent take-aways to get your employees on the path to financial resilience at a time when money really matters.

Find out more and sign up to attend in person here.

The livestream link can be found here.

Transgender Day of Remembrance Event

This week is Transgender Awareness Week, culminating on Sunday with the Transgender Day of Remembrance, which memorialises the hundreds of people each year whose lives are lost to transphobic violence.

The university’s Multi-Faith Chaplaincy is organising a free event to mark the occasion, and invites staff, students and the wider public, regardless of belief, to come together in an evening of reflection and remembrance.

The event will begin with refreshments in the Minerva building from 6-7pm this Sunday 20th, followed by religious and non-religious speeches and readings in the Jackson Lecture Theatre (MB0603) from 7-8.30pm. This is an inter-faith event and will feature representatives from a range of belief systems, including secular contributions.

All welcome, no registration necessary.
