Raqs Media Collective
Project Space Plus, AAD East, University of Lincoln
Opening Tuesday 12 April 5-7pm
You are invited to the opening of a new exhibition by New Delhi-based artists Raqs Media Collective at Project Space Plus.
In the run up to the opening of a new public work later in the year, Raqs are presenting selected past works, alongside a new series of prints.
“Happen-Stances” is a suite of prints based on Raqs Media Collective’s study of ‘An Investigation of The Laws of Thought’ a book by the nineteenth century Lincoln-born mathematician George Boole. Boole pioneered the concept of ‘logic gates’ using category constellations such as ‘yes’ and ‘no’ that went on to become the foundations of ‘Boolean Logic’ in computer programming. In Happen-Stances, Raqs weaves statements about wealth, possibility, ethics and abundance out of the texture of Boole’s formulations, through the operations of chance. These are transformed into image-text objects that could be aids to thinking, or simply enjoyed as anticipations of word-sculptures in print form.
The Raqs Media Collective enjoys playing a plurality of roles, often appearing as artists, occasionally as curators, sometimes as philosophical agent provocateurs. They make contemporary art, have made films, curated exhibitions, edited books, staged events, collaborated with architects, computer programmers, writers and theatre directors and have founded processes that have left deep impacts on contemporary culture in India.
Raqs have had recent major exhibitions in Madrid, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, St Louis and Boston, took part in the Venice Biennale in 2015, and have been appointed the chief curators for the forthcoming Shanghai Biennale.
