Students who are dyslexic sought for survey

Cognitive immobilisation in Higher Education students who are dyslexic:  Exploring links with aspects of memory and fluctuating emotional status, informing effective coping strategies.

This survey is addressed to all dyslexic students studying at this university who hold a current diagnostic assessment report, as part of my research project for my EdD course. I would be very grateful if you could spare a few moments to complete the attached questionnaire.

My research project will explore the way increased stress and anxiety can result in an HE student who is dyslexic entering a panic/stress loop that can leave him/her, literally, immobilized and temporarily unable to continue with their academic work.

The information you supply will be kept strictly confidential and will be anonymized on receipt. It will be securely stored by me electronically for 5 years after the end of this 1 year project, when it will be destroyed.

Your completion and submission of this questionnaire implies consent for the information to be used within the research project.

Survey link:  https://surveyplanet.com/5628c962616fc8b83507cecf

If you would prefer to complete a paper-based copy of the questionnaire, please text or email me and I will arrange it.

I seek 20 volunteers to take part in the rest of the project which will run until the end of this academic year.  I will meet you regularly on a 1:1 basis in the main university library at mutually agreed times.

Participants who complete the research requirements will be entered into a draw for a £150 Amazon gift voucher.

To volunteer to continue participation, or for further details, please contact me on 078 999 666 80 or email annharrislock@aol.com.

Magna Carta art competition launched

Magna1-300x231

The University of Lincoln has been awarded a grant from the Magna Carta Trust’s 800th Anniversary Commemoration Committee to create a work of outdoor art for our campus. This can be freestanding or designed as part of an existing building.  The work of art can be created or constructed from any material – the budget for construction is £5,000.

As part of the Magna Carta celebrations, the poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, who is also a Visiting Artist at the University, crafted a poem to celebrate the 800th anniversary. That poem is to be the inspiration for your work of art and a copy is available on our website.

Dame Carol Ann Duffy will be one of the judges for the competition.

The closing date for the competition is 30 December 2015.

For full competition details and the poem, please visit http://magnacarta.blogs.lincoln.ac.uk/

Carol Ann Duffy, UK Poet Laureate, Gillian Clarke, The National Poet of Wales and Imtiaz Dharker, Holder of the Queen’s Award for Poetry were commissioned by cultural solutions UK and Lincolnshire County Council to write a poetic response to the 800th anniversary of the sealing of Magna Carta. The project, known as ‘Poets Laureate Lincolnshire Landscape’ saw the work shared with community groups across Lincolnshire who reflected upon the poems, before using them as inspiration to create their own artistic response.
Funded by Arts Council England and Lincolnshire County Council.

Scholarship for outstanding international student

studentaward

An outstanding international student has won a scholarship to study for a postgraduate business qualification at the University of Lincoln, United Kingdom, after completing a degree in economics in the United States.

Anh D Tran, who is from Vietnam, won the University’s International Academic Excellence Scholarship when he joined the MSc Finance programme in Lincoln Business School. The scholarship this year provides a 50% reduction in tuition fee on the one-year Master’s course.

The 22-year-old, who completed his Bachelor’s degree in economics at the University of St Thomas in Minnesota, USA, was presented with the scholarship award by Lincoln’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mary Stuart, during a special ceremony at Lincoln’s Brayford Pool Campus.

Professor Stuart said: “I am delighted to welcome Anh to the University of Lincoln. He has already shown that he is an accomplished student and we are confident he will continue to flourish in the academic community at Lincoln Business School.

“We are proud to attract academic talent from countries around the world and our International Academic Excellence Scholarships are one way we can recognise the achievements of our international students and support them to progress further.”

Mr Tran said he had decided to pursue postgraduate study at Lincoln after it was recommended to him by a current student.  Another factor was the opportunity to learn from his compatriot, Dr Hao Quach, Senior Lecturer at Lincoln Business School and a former Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University.

Mr Tran explained: “I thought I would learn a lot from him because he is well known in Vietnam for his education and background. All these things made up my mind and I decided Lincoln was where I wanted to go!”

Besides his studies, Anh intends to watch his favourite football team, Manchester United, while he is in the UK. After completing his Masters, he plans to return to his home city of Hanoi.

“I want to go back and use what I learnt in the US and UK to benefit my country and my people,” he said.

The University of Lincoln’s International Excellence Scholarships are available for eligible international students for entry in September 2016. More details can be found on our website.

Lincoln to host UK premiere of new documentary, The Genius of George Boole

George Boole
George Boole

George Boole, the pioneering Lincoln-born mathematician whose work laid the foundations for the digital age, is to be celebrated in a new documentary film narrated by Oscar-winning actor Jeremy Irons.

First screened by RTE in Ireland, the documentary will be premiered in the UK on 25 October during Frequency 2015, Lincoln’s festival of digital culture, just a few days before the bicentenary of Boole’s birth – ‘George Boole Day’- is celebrated on 2 November 2015. Filmed in Ireland (Cork), the UK and US, this 58 minute film shines new light on the life, work and legacy of a man whose role in the digital revolution is not widely known.

Born in Lincoln, George Boole was an English mathematician, philosopher and logician. He worked in the fields of differential equations and algebraic logic, and is best known as the author of The Mathematical Analysis of Logic (1847) and An Investigation of the Laws of Thought (1854). His algebra of logic, now called Boolean algebra, forms the basis of today’s computer languages and electronic circuitry. Much of the ‘new mathematics’ now studied by children in school – set theory, binary numbers and Boolean algebra – has its origins in Boole’s work.

Produced by multi award-winning Oxford Film and Television, and commissioned by University College Cork, The Genius of George Boole assembles industry leaders and academics from across the globe to explore the life and importance of one of the scientific world’s greatest unsung heroes, exploring the huge impact of his work on technology today.

The UK premiere is presented at The Collection, Lincoln, in partnership with The University of Lincoln and Threshold Studios as part of Frequency Festival of Digital Culture 2015. Other events to mark the occasion in Lincoln include:

• a special exhibition ‘The Life and Legacy of George Boole’ at Lincoln Cathedral, where there is a stained glass window honouring Boole’s achievements. Conceived and created in a partnership between University College Cork and the University of Lincoln, it draws upon the Boole Papers and the collections of the Royal Society to tell the story of his life and work.
• a talk on Boole’s life and work by Canon Dr Mark Hocknull of Lincoln Cathedral and the University of Lincoln. Boole combined his interests in mathematics and theology and Hocknull holds doctorates in both science and religious studies. Book at: http://www.lincolncathedralshop.com/more-info/canon-dr-mark-hocknull
• a talk about the mathematical legacy of Boole’s work by Dr Evgeny Khukhro of the School of Mathematics & Physics at the University of Lincoln. Book at: www.lincoln.ac.uk/events
• a George Boole trail taking visitors on a tour of locations significant to Boole’s life in Lincoln, which can be downloaded from Visit Lincoln’s website: http://www.visitlincoln.com/trails/george-boole-trail

Boole was born in Lincoln on 2 November 1815, the son of a struggling shoe-maker. Largely self-taught in mathematics, he started work as an assistant teacher before establishing his own school in Lincolnshire at the age of 19. He began to produce original mathematical research and, in 1844, he was awarded the first gold medal for mathematics by the Royal Society. He stayed in Lincolnshire until his appointment in 1849 as the first professor of mathematics at Queen’s College, Cork (now University College Cork) in Ireland. Boole died prematurely from a fever at the age of 49 and is buried in Cork. Although he was recognised as a genius in his own lifetime, it was not until almost a century later that the far-reaching implications of Boole’s work would become apparent. An American electronics engineer named Claude Shannon realised Boole’s logic could be applied in producing electrical circuits: a discovery that started the digital revolution. Today even the most advanced computers and smart devices still depend on Boolean logic.
