The Lincoln Academy of Learning and Teaching (LALT) will host an exhibition of student research projects on Wednesday 20th September at the Sarah Swift Building from midday to 3pm.

Students are invited to attend and vote on their favourite project. All the student projects within the exhibition were funded through the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Scheme (UROS) and details about how to apply for funding in 2018 will be available.

UROS is a flagship student engagement project, and features students from across the University. UROS is a unique scheme that encourages staff and student collaboration on research projects.

Students visiting the exhibition will be eligible to vote for their favourite poster, pick up useful information about other student engagement opportunities and there will be sweets too!

Become a Student Ambassador!

The University is recruiting for Student Ambassadors to join their team for this academic year. 

The Student Ambassador role, which involves helping at open days, School visits and other events, as well as various other working opportunities, is an excellent way for students to gain work experience and earn some money while studying.

Applications from students on all levels and qualifications are welcome.

Lincoln Book Festival, 25-30 September

Staff from the University of Lincoln will be contributing to this year’s Lincoln Book Festival.

The six-day literary festival takes place from 25th to 30th September at venues across the city.

It begins on Monday 25th September at The Collection on Danes Terrace, Lincoln, when the charity First Story will showcase written work by pupils from Lincolnshire schools.

Throughout the week there are talks by leading authors including David Starkey, Alison Weir and Diane Setterfield as well as writers’ workshops, schools activities and local history talks and tours.

University involvement in this year’s festival includes:Book Festival Logo 1

* Wednesday 27th September (afternoon): academics from the School of English and Journalism will deliver a masterclass for pupils of local schools and colleges studying Gothic fiction as part of the English Literature A-Level curriculum.

* Thursday 28th September (evening): Dr Scott Brewster from Lincoln’s School of English and Journalism will chair a discussion with novelist Diane Setterfield, author of international bestseller The Thirteenth Tale, on fiction of a Gothic disposition.

* Friday 29th September (evening): Professor Philippa Hoskin from the School of History and Heritage will chair an event with historians Alison Weir and Sarah Gristwood on queenship and the exercise of power by female rulers from the Norman Conquest to the Reformation, followed by a talk by art historian Janina Ramirez on ‘the private lives of the saints’ of Anglo-Saxon England.

* Saturday 30th September (afternoon): Dr Jim Cheshire from the School of History and Heritage will chair an afternoon of talks and tours exploring the revival of Gothic architecture in Victorian England, including a visit to St Nicholas Church on Newport, Lincoln, the first church designed by George Gilbert Scott.

Lincoln Book Festival connects audiences of all ages and interests with some of the UK’s best-loved historians and authors of historical fiction. The festival places ‘history at its heart’ with events exploring historical themes spanning ancient empires to contemporary culture though intimate talks, readings, discussions and Q&As with contributions from acclaimed writers, academics, cultural commentators and public figures.

Tom Heap Countryfile

TV presenter Tom Heap is a freelance broadcaster and journalist with a passionate concern for rural affairs, science and the environment. Tom presents the investigations on Countryfile – Britain’s most popular factual TV programme. This feature is the most journalistic element of the show, where breaking news and revealing the hidden depths of current rural and environment stories. He is also the principal voice of ‘Costing the Earth’ on Radio 4, the nations only dedicated environment series. He is also a regular Panorama reporter covering food, farming energy and wildlife.

His style is both informal and informative, seeking to engender a lively atmosphere and useful knowledge for the audience. Tom is valued for his specialist understanding and experience of how the media handles often controversial topics within the rural affairs and environment sector. The lecture title and content is to be confirmed in the coming weeks and will form part of the University of Lincoln’s Great Lives lecture series.

Comedian, writer and director Stewart Lee has had an incredibly varied and successful career including successfully writing award-winning TV and radio shows and directing and co-writing Jerry Springer The Opera.

Stewart Lee visits the University of Lincoln for the first time to about his career which spans across comedy, performance, writing, TV, radio, theatre and music reviewing in an informal but informative conversational session where the audience will hear a very personal and inspiring account of a career in comedy, culture and the arts overcoming adversity.

Stewart made his name in the mid-1990s as one half of the radio duo Lee and Herring, alongside Richard Herring, a success followed through with extensive touring to build up a live following.. His more recent work has included, Comedy Vehicle, which has received a number of accolades including a British Comedy Award for Best Comedy Entertainment Programme and Best Male Television Comic and in 2012 won a BAFTA Television Award for Best Comedy Programme. The programme returned for its fourth season in 2015.

Enhancing the student LGBT+ community

The University of Lincoln is committed to fostering an environment where diversity is celebrated and everyone is treated fairly, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, marital status, ethnic origin, nationality, disability, class, religion or belief, and/or age.

This academic year, more than ever, the University of Lincoln will embrace diversity and inclusiveness. In February 2018, we will celebrate LGBT History Month and host a number of LGBT-related events, among them Transitional States, a programme that includes an international video art exhibition where LGBT+ topics are prominent. In addition to the exhibition, the University will also host number of public discussions with LGBT artists, activists and public figures.

To kick off this exciting programme, Gendered Intelligence, a LGBT+ organisation that works with youth groups, will run a workshop for all interested students on Wednesday 27th September 2017 at 1pm. The workshop will cover topics such understanding gender diversity and the impact of gender stereotyping; how to challenge prejudice and discrimination; and creative ways to get involved in Lincoln’s LGBT community so help foster an environment where diversity is celebrated and valued. This workshop will allow you to meet other students interested in creating an engaged community across the LGBT+ spectrum in Lincoln. Drinks will be provided following the workshop.

Architecture student to represent the region at national awards

A national property award could be in sight for a talented Architecture student at the University of Lincoln as she features in the shortlist for the 2017 Women in Property Student Awards. 

Demi McCoid, who is about to embark on her final year at the University, was selected from 12 regional finalists to represent Yorkshire and the North East in the national competition taking place next week, on Wednesday 20th September.

Organised by the Association of Women in Property (WiP), the awards aim to recognise excellence in the property industry, encouraging up-and-coming talent and nurturing the role models of tomorrow.

By linking with universities, the awards raise awareness among students of the career options available to them. Many students go on to secure work placements as a direct result of competing in the awards, which often translate into permanent positions upon graduation.

During the regional heats, Demi was put through her paces, undergoing an interview with high-profile regional judges drawn from the property industry and higher education, before presenting her own proposal for a city bakery which allows customers to observe and engage in the process of bread-making.

Demi was nominated for the award by the Bachelor of Architecture studio team at the University of Lincoln. Barbara Griffin, Programme Leader and Senior Lecturer in the Lincoln School of Architecture and the Built Environment, said: “We are incredibly proud of Demi. She is a very diligent and passionate student who is fully dedicated to the study and practice of architecture. Her passion and energy is clear in her research and design work and in her ambition to make a difference as a woman in the industry.”

Speaking after securing her place at the 2017 national final, Demi said: “This process has given me confidence to believe in my own potential and I am beyond excited for the future. The people I’ve met so far have shared with me their positive and inspirational outlook on what it means to be a woman in property and I am grateful to be a part of this process and do what I can to be a future role model for women aspiring to a career in property.”

Demi will be joined by Sheffield Hallam University student, Lauren-Mae Crofts, at the national “Best of Best” Black Tie Awards Dinner in London.
