LSJ students selected to report on offshore wind industry

Norstec Academy

Two students from the University of Lincoln’s School of Journalism have been selected to document a week-long tour of the offshore renewables industry, as part of a new Norstec Academy initiative.

The student tour, which takes place in July, has been arranged to showcase the wealth of career opportunities offered by offshore renewables. 20 students from around the UK will take the tour after winning a competition hosted by Norstec Academy, which aims to engage the next generation of employees in the industry, and give students from all disciplines a taste of the opportunities available in the sector – from engineering to PR, from law to sales and financing.

LSJ students Dan Brown and Ben Staff will join the tour as reporters and support the Norstec team by capturing and documenting student perceptions and experiences on film, in writing, and through social media. They will be joined by Nancy Fleming from City University, London.

Speaking ahead of the tour, Ben said: “Not only do we have reporting skills, but the competition winners are in a social group that we know best, and we are more than used to writing for this particular audience. Our studies have put a particular focus on reporting student stories, so being able to put these skills to practice in a real working environment, one which has a particularly positive back-drop, is incredibly rewarding for us.”

Dan added: “It’s a fast-growing industry, and one that students of today can have a huge influence on in the future. The wind energy industry will help the environment and also has the potential to provide huge economic benefits to the UK. We have just celebrated Global Wind Day and hopefully more young people will take an interest in the industry, which Ben and I can help build on with the tour. It will also be a great experience for us, and gives us the chance to learn more about an industry we could well be involved in, in the coming years.”

The tour will take place in July. For more information on the Norstec Academy, visit http://www.norstecacademy.org/.

Students’ Union take on management of Engine Shed

su_logo

The University of Lincoln has announced that the management of its student venues will transfer to the Students’ Union.

The announcement follows the transfer of management of The Shed in January 2014 and is aimed at continuing to improve the student experience on campus. Market research undertaken by an external organisation last year indicated that students wanted more student-led social space and activity.

Any profit made from the venues will now be directly invested into meeting other aims students set out for improving the student experience, such as expanding support on academic issues, enhancing the course representation system and improving volunteering and activities.

James Brooks, CEO of the Lincoln Students’ Union, said: “I am really pleased that Lincoln students will have a venue that they can call their own where they will have a real say over what events and activities take place within it. The student experience at Lincoln is something that we pride ourselves upon and this can only enhance that further. All permanent staff employed at the venues will be part of this exciting new venture.”

If you have any suggestions for either the Tower Bar or Engine Shed, please contact the Students’ Union via venues@lincolnsu.com.

Media moguls past, present and future join LSM’s anniversary celebrations

Meet the Graduates

Professionals from across the modern media industries came together as the University of Lincoln’s School of Media welcomed more than 30 successful alumni back to celebrate its 20th anniversary.

Lincoln has for the last two decades produced leading lights of global media production, with its graduates going on to work at the cutting edge of today’s radio, film, television and online entertainment industries.

During a day of special ‘Meet the Graduate’ events, current undergraduate students were invited to network with alumni members and attend a dedicated question and answer session with an expert panel of former students. Panel members included TV Editor Stuart Lutes, whose credits include Big Brother, Sky News and John Bishop’s Britain, and Holly Smith from The Brewery, a visual effects company that has produced music videos for Coldplay and Take That.

They were joined by more than 30 other media professionals from the School’s alumni network, including national television editors, producers and researchers, marketers, teachers and representatives from across the creative industries.

Speaking at the event, Dr Sarah Barrow, Head of the Lincoln School of Media, said: “We are delighted to be joined by so many of our alumni members to help us celebrate the 20th anniversary of Media education at Lincoln. It is truly inspiring to hear about their many successes, and it is invaluable for our current students to benefit from their vast experiences and to understand the wealth of opportunities on offer after graduation.

“According to recent reports, today’s media and creative industries are the ‘economic powerhouse’ of the UK, so we are extremely proud to offer our students some of the best career prospects in the country.”

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the School also launched its new Media Mentoring Scheme, which will see current undergraduate students working with industry mentors to support their personal and career development. Through the scheme, 25 mentors currently working in the media industries will be partnered with second and third year students to support their smooth transition from study into work.

Jordan Livermore, LSM alumnus and Assistant Producer for Channel 4’s Gadget Man, will act as a mentor on the scheme and also participated in the School’s ‘Meet the Graduates’ event. He said: “It is great to be involved in the new mentoring scheme, as I know how daunting it can be for students who are finishing their degree courses and taking the first step onto the career ladder, but this scheme provides a gentle gradient for them and buffers the impact of moving into industry from education.”

The Lincoln School of Media is home to esteemed Visiting Professors including former Vice President of Warner Bros. Studios, Rick Senat, and Richard Adams of Microsoft Studios. It is also renowned for launching the careers of multimedia YouTube sensations Thomas ‘TomSka’ Ridgewell, who has over 2.5 million subscribers and almost 500 million views on his channel, and Jack Howard, who was hailed as an “inspiration” by Jon Kilik, the Hollywood producer behind the award-winning Hunger Games films.

UK’s leading social worker shares expertise with Lincoln students

Lyn Romeo Presentation (1 of 12)

The UK’s first Chief Social Worker for Adults visited the University of Lincoln to meet almost 100 social workers, students and academic staff and deliver a series of free talks, as part of her mission to improve morale within the sector.

Lyn Romeo, who began her role in September 2013, was appointed by the Care and Support Minister Norman Lamb MP, as one of the most senior social workers in the country. She is responsible for supporting and challenging the profession to ensure adults receive the best possible help from social workers, provide independent advice to government ministers on social work reform, provide leadership and drive improvement within the profession.

As a champion for social care service users and professionals, Lyn was invited to the city of Lincoln by Lincolnshire County Council. On Thursday 27th February, she began her visit by addressing an invited audience of students, academics and practitioners from across the county.

Speaking on ‘The Future of Social Work in Adult Care’, Lyn discussed the industry’s prominent issues, and invited audience members to share their thoughts and questions in an open forum and discussion.

During her visit, Lyn also worked with senior managers of Lincolnshire Adult Care on a range of issues and developments.

Nigel Horner, Head of the University of Lincoln’s School of Health and Social Care, said: “We were delighted to welcome Lyn Romeo to the University. Her visit provided an extremely valuable opportunity for the county’s practitioners, academic staff, and particularly our students, to discuss important professional issues with one of the industry’s leading figures. We are all grateful to Lyn to sharing with us the benefit of her vast experience and her vision for Social Work with Adults in the new landscape of integrated health and care services.”

Glen Garrod, Director of Adult Social Services at Lincolnshire County Council, said: “I am delighted that Lyn was prepared to spend a day with us in Lincolnshire. She has a key role in ensuring that the voice of social work – notably adult social work and social care in general – is heard at the heart of government. With so much change taking place such as the advent of the Care Bill, future funding reforms, integration with health and, the statutory footing for Safeguarding Adults we need the voice of the profession to be heard clearly and for it to be articulated well. Lyn has more than enough skill and experience to do both.”

National Libraries Day celebrations – Friday 7 February

Library

The University of Lincoln Library invites staff and students to join a national day of celebration.

National Libraries Day, which takes place on Friday 7th February 2014, is a free-to-join gathering of people who believe in the importance of libraries in our communities, personal lives and education.

The library team at Lincoln will mark the special occasion with a number of displays in the Atrium as well as the GCW Library, to demonstrate the pride visitors take in their library, which will be on show from Thursday 6 – Friday 14 February.

There will also be a celebratory event in the library on Friday 7 February, when visitors will receive goody bags from 10am and be invited to take part in a competition. There will be 10 laminated signs hidden around the library, which should be presented at the customer service desk in exchange for a prize.

The National Libraries Day celebration follows a recent YouGov poll, which revealed that over half of the UK population has a current library card, and 47% have used a public library in the past year.

Staff and students are also being asked to tweet their favourite book, and let the team know why the library is important in their lives. Users can tweet the team @GCWLibrary with #NLD14 #YourLibrary or share thoughts via the Facebook Page.
