Students from the University of Lincoln will perform an impressive catalogue of Shakespearian classics at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre in a season dedicated to the world’s most famous playwright.
‘Shakespeare Season’ will include a collection of productions that will open to the public from Tuesday 3rd – Saturday 7th December 2013, delivering five nights of Shakespeare’s finest works, directed and abridged by the Lincoln School of Performing Arts and performed by second-year undergraduate students.
Speaking ahead of the performances, Dr Diane Dubois, Senior Lecturer at the Lincoln School of Performing Arts, said: “Our Shakespeare module is often one that students can be apprehensive about, having not enjoyed reading his plays at school. However by the end of the module they adore his work – Shakespeare was, after all, written to be performed, not read, and it is only through performance that you come to realise just how fabulous the plays are. It is through this live encounter with Shakespeare as a playwright that our students come to love his plays, and we look forward to sharing this experience with the public.”
Michael Cahill, a student performing in the Shakespeare Season, said: “Being part of a large ensemble Shakespeare piece has proved to be a very challenging and rewarding experience. Shakespearean texts in performance are often greeted with a lot of nerves as there are such high expectations when performing such great plays. However, since working on the play Cymbeline I have found that bringing the text to life has enabled my peers and I to truly understand the language of the play. The language that Shakespeare uses encourages us to push ourselves as actors as we immerse ourselves in his complicated characters and complex storylines. Now we are all looking forward to taking to the stage in December.”
This year, students will perform Much Ado about Nothing, Hamlet, The Winter’s Tale, Cymbeline and Julius Caesar.
Tickets are priced at £5 for concessions, students and under-26s, and £7 for adults, or audiences can book to attend all five performances for £20. Tickets can be purchased from the Box Office at the Lincoln Performing Arts Centre via the Box Office (01522 837600), and for more information visit www.lpac.co.uk.
