The worlds of art and engineering have been brought together by Graphic Design students at the University of Lincoln, UK, in a special print collection created for Siemens UK.
Dubbed ‘The Lincoln Collection’, the artwork was commissioned to commemorate Siemens’ long standing role within the city’s engineering industry and the local community.
The designs were produced by four students on the BA (Hons) Graphic Design course, who were each given a different theme to base their work on. The themes spanned engineering heritage and Lincoln’s history to Siemens’ community and its customers’ world.
Initially the artwork was destined for the walls of Siemens’ offices in Teal Park, near Lincoln, but the project and resulting designs have proved so popular with Siemens staff that they will now be used at the company’s sites across the UK and overseas.
Amy Burstow (21) was of the students involved in the project and took on the Engineering Heritage brief. She said: “I am really happy with my posters but I think all 20 of them look great as a collection. I have never worked in this style before so it was interesting to learn the technique of this style: hand drawn and digital. You always learn new ways around the software when tackling new styles, so I have learnt a few new tips and tricks along the way!”
Olivia Jones (23), who developed the Our Community theme, added: “Opportunities like this are a fantastic help in trying to secure a job in the design world. With Siemens being such a huge, global company, adding them to my CV as a client that I have worked for will hopefully go a very long way.”
Neil Corner, Managing Director for Siemens in Lincoln, said: “We are delighted with this project. The idea was to bring some colour to our walls and widen our collaboration with the University of Lincoln to other subject areas as we already have great collaboration with the School of Engineering.
“The aim was to translate our gas turbines business, heritage and involvement in the community into poster art to decorate our offices and welcome areas for our employees and customers to enjoy. The students did a great job and the results are fantastic.”
