The University of Lincoln has been ranked among the top five universities in the UK for the proportion of students who can enjoy a cost-free stroll into campus.

In a new league table published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA), Lincoln is ranked fourth in the UK, and third in England, for the percentage of students who commute to university on foot.

More than three quarters (77%) of Lincoln’s students walk to university each day. By contrast, for students in other areas of the country the cost of travel can be as much £15.10 per week in London and £12.50 per week in Brighton. The average cost of weekly travel for students nationwide is £6.50.

Earlier this month, the University of Lincoln received a Green Award – the highest level of accreditation from the nationwide Investors in the Environment (iiE) scheme – in recognition of its commitment to reducing environmental impact.

Dan Clayton, Environment and Sustainability Manager at the University of Lincoln, said: “At the University of Lincoln, we have implemented a comprehensive Travel Plan which focuses on delivering efficient travel for our staff and students and supports sustainable transport options and active travel, such as cycling and walking. Our campus Master Plan is also designed to ensure the Brayford Pool campus is accessible to all, offers a welcoming environment and forms an integral part of the city centre.”
