Shaping politics or shaking politics? Lecture by Prof Jacqui Briggs | 8th Mar

The next College of Social Science Inaugural Lecture will take place on Wednesday 8th March.

Professor Jacqui Briggs will speak on Shaping politics or shaking politics?: Young People and Political Participation.

profJacquiBriggs_550x300px-300x163

Young people and political participation; the traditional view may see this as an oxymoron but is the political landscape changing? Are young people becoming more active? What is the reason behind that activity? Professor Jacqui Briggs’ inaugural lecture will focus upon the extent to which young people are becoming politicised – be that on an informal or a formal basis. How do they shape and impact upon the political scenario? On the other hand, do they pose a potential threat or challenge to the political system as we know it; are they shaking it up?

Jacqui Briggs begins by providing a brief autobiographical background in terms of her ‘journey’ regarding her research profile and career trajectory. She then proceeds to examine young people and politics per se before looking specifically at the topical issue of whether or not the voting age should be lowered to 16 years. This then turns to a focus upon the concept of citizenship and political education. Next, and particularly apposite given the fortuitous timing of international women’s day (8th March), Jacqui discusses the topic of young women and political participation. Could/should young women become a potent political force? Finally, Jacqui postulates as to what the future holds in terms of young people and political participation.

Arrival is at 5.30pm for a 6.00pm start. The presentation will last approximately one hour and conclude at 7pm with a drinks reception and an opportunity for networking and to continue any discussions arising from the lecture.

This lecture is free to attend, however booking is required. Please email collegesocialscience@lincoln.ac.uk

Santander Postgraduate Research Project Fund

Santander LogoThe University of Lincoln has been awarded funding to extend Santander’s mandate for internationalisation and innovation, and are pleased to announce a new call dedicated to support for research undertaken by our postgraduate research students.

In 1996 Emilio Botín, Chairman of Santander, decided that the bank should be useful to the communities in which it operates. With the conviction that the University is a vital cornerstone of development and progress, the division began to grow and so did its global outreach; eventually expanding into more than 20 countries, including Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Portugal and the UK. So far, Santander Universities has donated over €1 billion in the shape of scholarships, mobility grants, support for special projects and academic and non-academic awards.

There are awards of up to £500 per student available, and the scheme is open to all postgraduate research students.

Awards are available to postgraduate research students who seek to realise an innovative research project that complements their subject of study and the interests of their respective School or College. Applications should be for projects that have not yet taken place and full costing should be provided as a part of the application. Whilst £500 is the highest level of award available, not all awards will be at this level and applicants are asked to think carefully about the total cost of the project, and where additional funds may be secured if required.

Priority will be given to students who intend to work alongside a Santander Universities Network member and where demonstrable links are made to research and/or academics at Lincoln with a focus on or in the Santander network areas. If you would like further information on Santander Universities please see: http://lncn.eu/arw9

If you would like an application form please email graduateschool@lincoln.ac.uk. Completed forms should be sent to the same email address.

Deadline for applications is Thursday 9th March 2017.

Scholarships awarded to celebrate academic excellence

The academic achievements of new students at the University of Lincoln, UK, has been recognised with the presentation of a series of prestigious scholarship awards.

The University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Mary Stuart, presented the students with their awards at a special ceremony on Wednesday 8th February 2017, where recipients were joined by family members and teaching staff of their former schools and colleges.

Altogether 14 students from across the University’s four colleges received awards worth a combined total of £34,000. The scholarships are designed to support the academic aspirations of students by helping with costs such as books, course materials, accommodation or travel.

At this year’s ceremony 11 new undergraduate students were presented with the University of Lincoln’s Excellence Scholarship. Worth £1,000, the award recognises the accomplishments of the highest achieving new undergraduate students joining the institution.

At the event the winners also discovered which of them had been selected to receive the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship. This flagship award offers an additional £9,000 award over three years to a new undergraduate who has demonstrated outstanding academic abilities, proven commitment to their subject discipline and a personal impact on their community.

This year the Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship was awarded to Jade Chamberlain, a Physical Activity and Health Development student. As well as demonstrating exceptional academic ability during her time in sixth-form, Jade also devoted time to her school’s mentoring scheme where she supported a younger student with minor behavioural issues.

“I’m struggling to take it all in”, said Jade following the announcement. “It was such a surprise to receive the initial award but to be presented with the Vice Chancellor Award as well is unbelievable. I’ve always worked hard and for that effort to be recognised is so nice.”

Professor Mary Stuart said: “The Vice Chancellor’s and Excellence Scholarship Awards are an important moment of celebration within the academic year. It’s an opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of our new students in their academic journeys so far and to share those celebrations with their families and former teachers.

“With the support of these scholarships, we look forward to seeing these talented individuals go forward to achieve academic excellence in their degree studies and serve as ambassadors and role models for their chosen subjects.”

The other winners of the Excellence Scholarships were Anna Switalska and Rebecca Butterworth (International Business Management), Hannah Houghton (Drama and English), Charlie-Jay Williams (Computer Science), Shannon Batkin-Jones (Business and Management), Sarah Robinson-Benstead (Nursing with Registered Nurse (Adult)), Jerra Wooding (Drama), Danielle Kemp and Tom Firth (Business Studies), and Jessica Stark (Animal Behaviour and Welfare).

A further award, The Earl of Yarborough Scholarship for Chemistry worth £10,000 spread across three years, was presented to BSc (Hons) Chemistry student Amber McMorrin, while Abigail Thickett and Zoe Alison Price, studying MSc Forensic Psychology and MSc Clinical Animal Behaviour degrees respectively, were presented with the Court Bursary award.

NSS Central launched in the Library

The National Student Survey (NSS) 2017 has now launched and we are encouraging all final year students to take part.

The NSS provides our students with the opportunity to give their opinions on what they liked about their time at Lincoln, as well as things they felt could have been improved. Results are publicly available to prospective students, their families and advisors to help make informed choices of where and what to study.

The Lincoln Academy of Learning and Teaching team, led by Dave Prichard, have set up NSS Central in the University Library to provide an opportunity to students to complete the survey online and reflect on their time studying with us. If students drop-in to NSS Central to complete the survey they will receive a free coffee/tea/hot chocolate and cake as a thank you.

NSS Central is open on weekdays between Monday 6th February and Friday 3rd March from 8.30am to 4.30pm.

nss01

If you are currently in the final year of your undergraduate course, please take a few minutes over the next few days to come to the Library and complete the survey; it is important for us to gather the opinions of as many of our students as possible so we know the results are an accurate reflection of student satisfaction at Lincoln.

If you have questions yourself about NSS, the new questions for this year, or the way the results are used, please visit NSS Central and a member of the team will be able to help, or email dprichard@lincoln.ac.uk
