On Saturday the Prime Minister announced measures to restrict the spread of a new Covid-19 variant, known as Omicron.
New measures include reintroducing compulsory face coverings on public transport and in shops, an accelerated vaccine booster programme, changes to self-isolation rules, and to the UK’s travel red list. More information on the UK’s travel red list can be found on the link here.
Our priority is to keep staff and students safe, whilst protecting face-to-face teaching and our research activity. We are expecting the Government to update its guidance for universities in the coming days but in the meantime the University expects all staff and students to wear a face covering inside University buildings (unless exempt), adhere to one-way signs, sanitise hands regularly, and take twice weekly lateral flow tests. We also strongly encourage vaccination uptake among students and staff.
This means face coverings should now be worn in all University buildings, including in teaching sessions and communal spaces (stairwells, entrance lobbies and laundry rooms) within University accommodation. Staff and students who are exempt from wearing a face covering do not, of course, need to wear one and should, if asked, confirm their exemption.
University staff do not need to wear a face covering when sat at their desk but should wear one when moving around the office, or when visiting another office.
Please consider the safety of your friends and colleagues as we continue to look after our one community.
