The University and College Union (UCU) has begun a period of industrial action at the University.
This includes Action Short of a Strike (ASOS) starting Wednesday 25 June and a strike on Friday 4 July.
Action short of strike (ASOS) means staff continuing to work but refusing to do some activities deemed to be outside the terms of the employment contract. Sometimes this is called ‘work to rule’ or ‘work to contract’.
While the majority of University staff will not be taking part in the industrial action, plans are in place to minimise disruption to our students and staff, including end of year assessments and progress decisions. We do not expect any impact on September’s graduation ceremonies.
Most students will be unaffected by the upcoming industrial action but if you have specific concerns, please contact your School Office or the Student Support Centre. The University will also keep your Students’ Union updated.
The dispute relates to the University’s current restructuring and refusal to rule out the possibility of compulsory redundancies. The UCU secured a mandate for industrial action following a ballot of its members. About one in three academic staff members are members of the union.
We ask all staff members and students to be tolerant of different viewpoints and to respect our One Community values.
