New app to help students find appropriate health care treatment

Students in Lincoln are being urged to download a new NHS health care app for free to help tackle winter pressures.

ASAPLincs has been developed to help those who are unwell find the most appropriate treatment for their needs, while avoiding emergency departments.

It has been built using the very latest attendance data from Lincolnshire’s emergency departments alongside detailed behavioural research.

Users can identify their symptoms or condition from some of the most commonly seen in emergency departments. The app then displays the most appropriate local treatment service for them – useful for students who may not know what services are available to them in Lincoln.

Ruth Cumbers, Urgent Care Programme Director for Lincolnshire, said: “Students are a big part of the population in Lincoln and helping to keep them healthy is important to the NHS.

“For some, the range of NHS services available in the city and surrounding areas may be confusing and they might not know where is best for them to go if they are unwell.

“ASAPLincs has been designed to provide an easy to use, trustworthy and quick method of finding the most appropriate place to go for treatment for a user’s needs.

“While we hope ASAPLincs can have an impact over winter, it can also help relieve some of the pressures on the system throughout the year.

“For example, whenever a student is unwell or gets injured playing sport, they can use the app or website knowing they will be signposted to the most appropriate place for their needs.

“Lots of research has been done into the way our brains operate. The results of that have been fed into the development of this app.

“That is why we are confident it can help us educate and advise patients that the emergency department is not necessarily the best place for them to be.

“We want students to be aware of alternatives, to trust the alternatives and know when and where they are available. The app and website does all of this in an easily accessible way.”

To date, the app has been downloaded more than 6,500 times, while the website has been viewed more than 10,000 times.

The website can be accessed via www.asaplincs.nhs.uk while the ASAPLincs app is available on both Apple and Android devices and can be downloaded via your app store.

Cat owners invited to take part in student survey

A student from the School of Life Sciences is inviting cat owners to take part in a short research survey, designed to explore how people interpret different cat behaviours.

The research is being conducted by Shannon Etherington, who is in her third year of the Animal Behaviour and Welfare programme. She hopes the study could shed light on how demographic factors can influence cat behaviour interpretation.

The survey consists of 19 questions in total and should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. The survey includes four videos of cat behaviour which can be viewed via YouTube, and the survey should therefore be completed on desktop computers or laptops. All participants will remain anonymous.

To complete the survey please visit: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/XL8HZKD

If you have any queries about the study, please contact Shannon via email: animalbehaviourstudy@gmail.com

Lecture Recording Pilot 2016-17

To further support your learning and in response to student feedback, we are trialling Panopto, a lecture recording system, for the 16/17 academic year. The system records the audio, video and slides from your teaching sessions, and is currently available in nine teaching spaces across the campus.

Your tutors are able to request that their lectures are recorded within these trial locations and the recordings then become viewable by you through Blackboard. We hope that the videos will be a useful additional learning tool; allowing you to review the lecture at your own pace, or to revisit specific topics during your revision.

Working with the Students’ Union, we will be evaluating the trial throughout the year.  If successful, we plan to expand to include more teaching spaces in the future.

co_LAB workshop – Call for Participants

co_LAB is pleased to announce that we will be running our next intensive cross-college workshop in May (9-13) and are currently seeking enthusiastic participants from across the University. The call is open to L2 students from all Colleges (although applicants from other years will also be considered).

co_LAB workshops bring together staff and students from different academic contexts, employing a student-directed, discovery-based learning approach to support a range of 21st century skills (collaboration, innovation, group problem-solving, digital media literacies). Check out what we got up to in a previous project undertaken last year for a little taste of what you might expect.

Here are just some of the benefits of taking part in this project:

  • Network and meet other students working in different academic disciplines
  • Discover new approaches to conceptual development, research and collaborative production
  • Shape the way you learn by having more autonomy in the curriculum
  • Share your voice on challenging contemporary debates and produce new knowledge
  • Exhibit your work at a public facing event
  • Counts as ‘extra-curricular activity’ for Lincoln Award
  • Outputs to be considered for the European Youth Award

If you would like to take part in this workshop please fill in the online application form or follow the instructions in the poster below. We will be holding an informal briefing on the project for all who may wish to take part but want to find out a little more information on Thursday 21st April 2016, 15.30 in room MC2113B (2nd floor MHT).
